Tommy Dorsey : Trombonology (Arranged for 17 Piece Swing Band)

Product Code : Dorsey_01
Thomas Francis "Tommy" Dorsey, Jr. (November 19, 1905 – November 26, 1956) was an American jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and bandleader of the Big Band era. He was known as the "Sentimental Gentleman of Swing", because of his smooth-toned trombone playing. His technical skill on the trombone gave him renown among other musicians. He was the younger brother of bandleader Jimmy Dorsey. After Dorsey broke with his brother in the mid-1930s, he led an extremely popular and highly successful band from the late 1930s into the 1950s. He is best remembered for standards such as "Opus One," "Song of India," "Marie," "On Treasure Island," and his biggest hit single "I'll Never Smile Again."
Trombonology is a very technical piece that could be described as uncharacteristic compared to the style of the other repertoire that Tommy played or composed. This is definitely a challenge to any aspiring trombone player owing to the many technical skills required to perform it including accurate slide control, lip flexibility and high register ability at the end of the piece (ending on High F). We have made this solo as accessible as possible by adding what in view are the slide positions that make this as easy as possible to play.
Our arrangement of this piece is musically as close to the originally recorded version as possible, and we are not aware of any other arrangement available elsewhere like this.
As for our arrangement of” I’m getting sentimental over you” (see above), we would recommend that all trombone players who possess a reasonable ability on the instrument, that even if you don’t feel that you are able to perform this piece in front of an audience, then you should still consider using this piece for practise purposes which will enhance your playing no end. You may then arrive at the stage where you then feel that you can actually perform this piece live!
The instrumentation required for this version of the arrangement is: - 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones (including the solo part) ,2 Alto Saxophones, 2 Tenor Saxophones, 1 Baritone Saxophone, Rhythm Guitar, Piano, Bass Guitar, and drums.
