JS Bach : Fugue from Sonata No.1 for solo violin (arranged for brass quintet)

Product Code : JS Bach_03
As is often the case the set of 6 sonatas’ and partitas for solo violin (BWV1001 – 1006) were never published until well after the composer’s death, and even after publication, they were largely ignored until the virtuosi Joseph Joachim began performing these works. Today these are considered an essential part of the violin repertoire.
The versatility of the violin makes it possible for a single player to “accompany” themselves, using the double-stopping technique., and for this project we thought this was an ideal example of yet another violin piece that is both very musical, and by breaking it down in to its component parts, very playable by a brass ensemble, and again as far as we are aware, has not been made available for brass ensemble until now.
Technically this is of intermediate difficulty. While our usual steps to make this as easy as possible to play have been implemented, it still can’t be described as easy, and the hardest part which is played mainly by the 1st trumpet player, is the cadenza like closing section of the piece. We have suggested that like many violin players perform this piece today, the closing section begins slowly then accelerates as you can hear in the playback. You can adjust this to suit a player’s preference if you prefer. Cues have been added here to help the rest of the ensemble. Although the work has “in built “harmony as mentioned above, we have added a small amount of additional harmony in a few places to back up the theme where we feel it is appropriate particularly in the middle-exposed section where the work breaks from the fugue theme. The tuba player gets to play a small amount of the fugue, but mainly provides a “continuo” part. This piece was particularly enjoyable to arrange, and to us is one of those pieces where the more you listen to it the more you enjoy it. We hope you will find the same performing it.

In most cases, this is the arrangment being played back using the Sibelius video export facility, but in some cases this is an actual performance by groups commissioned by Undiscovered Brass to actually perform the arrangment.
