JS Bach : Aria 47 from St Mathew Passion (Arranged for Brass quintet)

Product Code : JS Bach_01
The St Mathew Passion (BWV244) Is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. This arrangement is from part 2 of the work and is in its original form is performed by counter tenor (or alto voice), small string orchestra with organ continuo and a violin obligato part. It is an extremely beautiful Aria which was inconceivably omitted from brass repertoire until now. In our arrangement, both the violin obligato as well as the solo vocal lines are distributed amongst the trumpets, horn and trombone so as to provide as much contrast to the piece as possible as well as too lighten the load for each player. The tuba maintains the bass continuo line throughout.

Technically we would consider this as of intermediate difficulty. The main requirement is for the ensemble to maintain a good balance of the solo vocal line, violin obligato and accompaniment throughout the piece, and it would be particularly wise to listen carefully to a good recording of the original before attempting this both for the style of the ornamentation as well as the balance of obligato, soloist and accompaniment. We hope you enjoy playing this.
