The Nutcracker (op 71) which in Russian is “Щелкунчик, Балет-феерия / Shchelkunchik, Balet-feyeriya” is a two-act ballet, originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov . The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King", by way of Alexandre Dumas' adapted story "The Nutcracker". It was given its premiere at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg on Sunday, December 18, 1892. The original production was not a success, but the 20-minute concert suite that Tchaikovsky used from the ballet was. Since The late 1960’s the complete Nutcracker Ballet has enjoyed enormous popularity, and is now performed by countless ballet companies, primarily during the Christmas season, especially in the US. Major American ballet companies generate a large amount of their revenue from performances of The Nutcracker.
The work has become one of Tchaikovsky’s most famous compositions. Although there do exist other arrangements of this piece, we felt we still had to include in our library of arrangements. Again, we have attempted to make this as performable as possible by splitting the fast runs between different instruments.
Technically we would still have to class this as difficult despite our best efforts to simply it.
