Mozart : Symphony No.40 1st movement (Arranged for Brass quintet)

Product Code : Mozart_06
Symphony No. 40 in G minor (KV. 550) was written in 1788. It is sometimes referred to as the “Great G minor symphony”, to distinguish it from the "Little G minor symphony," No. 25. The date of completion of this symphony is known exactly, since Mozart in his later years kept a full catalogue of all his completed works, and he entered his 40th Symphony on 25 July 1788. Work on the symphony occupied an exceptionally productive period of just a few weeks during which time he also completed the 39th and 41st symphonies. It has been suggested by some that Mozart may never have heard his 40th Symphony performed. Although there is some disagreement to this among music scholars.
The first movement begins not with its first theme but with the accompaniment, played by the lower strings with divided violas. The technique of beginning a work with an accompaniment figure was later used by Mozart in his last piano concerto (KV. 595) and later still became an idea used by some of the Romantic composers.
The Symphony has received varying interpretations from critics. Robert Schumann regarded it as possessing "Grecian lightness and grace”. However, the common perception today is that the symphony is tragic in tone and intensely emotional. This symphony is unquestionably one of Mozart's most greatly admired works, and it is now frequently performed and recorded.
Our arrangement of the 1st movement is unfortunately not the easiest to perform despite our best efforts to make this as playable a s possible. The main difficulty is with the large amount of semiquaver runs which although we have tried to split up in the simplest way possible, this will still provide a challenge to any brass ensemble. No player in the ensemble will get bored with this since there is plenty to play for all, and all the players have a part in the action at various stages throughout our arrangement.
We would class this technically as difficult.

In most cases, this is the arrangment being played back using the Sibelius video export facility, but in some cases this is an actual performance by groups commissioned by Undiscovered Brass to actually perform the arrangment.
